چکیده

Cosmic acceleration is one of the most remarkable cosmological findings of recent years. Although a dark energy component has usually been invoked as the mechanism for the acceleration, A modification of Friedmann equation from various higher dimensional models provides a feasible alternative. Cardassian expansion is one of these scenarios, in which the universe is flat, matter (and radiation) dominated and accelerating but contains no dark energy component. This scenario is fully characterized by n, the power index of the so-called Cardassian term in the modified Friedmann equation, and Ωm, the matter density parameter of the universe. In this work, we first consider the constraints on the parameter space from the turnaround redshift, zq=0, at which the universe switches from deceleration to acceleration. We show that, for every Ωm, there exist a unique npeak(Ωm), which makes zq=0 reach its maximum value, [zq=0]max = exp [1/(2− 3npeak)] − 1, which is unlinearly inverse to Ωm. If the acceleration happans earlier than zq=0 = 0.6, suggested by Type Ia supernovae measurements, we have Ωm < 0.328 no matter what the power index is, and moreover, for reasonable matter density, Ωm ∼ 0.3, it is found n ∼ (−0.45, 0.25). We next test this scenario using the Sunyaev-Zeldovich/X-ray data of a sample of 18 galaxy clusters with 0.14 < z < 0.83 compiled by Reese et al. (2002). We determine n and Ωm, as well as the Hubble constant H0, using the χ 2 minimization method. The best fit to the data gives H0 = 59.2 kms Mpc, n = 0.5 and Ωm = Ωb (Ωb is the baryonic matter density parameter). However the constraints from the current SZ/X-ray data is weak, though a model with lower matter density is prefered. A certain range of the model parameters is also consistent with the data. Cardassian Expansion: Constraints from Compact Radio Source Angular Size versus Redshift Data

The “Cardassian Expansion Scenario” was recently proposed by Freese & Lewis as an alternative to a cosmological constant in explaining the current accelerating universe. In this paper we investigate observational constraints on this scenario from recent measurements of the angular size of high-z compact radio sources compiled by Gurvits and coworkers. We show that the allowed intervals for n an...

IMPORTANCE OF CLUSTER STRUCTURAL EVOLUTION IN USING X-RAY AND SUNYAEV-ZELDOVICH EFFECT GALAXY CLUSTER SURVEYS TO STUDY DARK ENERGY SubhabrataMajumdar

We examine the prospects for measuring the dark energy equation-of-state parameter w within the context of the still uncertain redshift evolution of galaxy cluster structure. We show that for a particular X-ray survey (Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect [SZE] survey), the constraints on w degrade by roughly a factor of 3 (factor of 2) when one accounts for the possibility of nonstandard cluster evolution...

Constraints on Cardassian Expansion from Distant type Ia Supernovae

The distant type Ia supernovae data compiled by Perlmutter et al. (1999) are used to analyze the Cardassian expansion scenario, which was recently proposed by Freese and Lewis (2002) as an alternative to a cosmological constant (or more generally a dark energy component) in explaining the currently accelerating universe. We show that the allowed intervals for n and zeq, the two parameters of th...

Are Clusters Standard Candles? Galaxy Cluster Scaling Relations with the Sunyaev-zeldovich Effect

An extensive sample of galaxy clusters will be available in the coming years, detected through their Sunyaev–Zeldovich effect (SZE). We use a semi–analytic model to study the scientific yield of combining SZE data with X-ray and optical follow-up observations. If clusters at a given redshift zo can be identified with virialized, spherical halos, they populate a well–defined ”fundamental plane” ...

Constraints on Cardassian Expansion

High redshift supernovae and Cosmic Microwave Background data are used to constrain the Cardassian expansion model (Freese & Lewis, 2002), a cosmology in which a modification to the Friedmann equation gives rise to a flat, matter-dominated Universe which is undergoing a phase of accelerated expansion. In particular, the precision of the positions of the Doppler peaks in the CMB angular power sp...
